A phone charger that suddenly loses power can be inconvenient. An outlet that stops working near a kitchen counter, garage, office workstation, gate operator, or security equipment can disrupt much more. If an outlet stopped working, what to do depends on whether the issue is isolated, tied to a safety device, or part of a larger circuit problem.
Start with simple, low-risk checks. Do not remove the outlet cover, take apart a receptacle, or work inside an electrical panel. If you see damage, smell burning, hear buzzing, or notice heat around the outlet, skip the checks and arrange for a qualified electrician to inspect it.
Start by ruling out the device
Before assuming the outlet has failed, test the item plugged into it. A damaged charger, power strip, lamp, or appliance can look like an outlet problem. Plug a known-working, low-power item into the outlet, such as a lamp, and test the original device at another working outlet.
If the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, make sure that switch is on. This is common with outlets intended for floor lamps in bedrooms, living rooms, offices, and reception areas. A switch may also be controlled by a timer, smart control, or occupancy setting, depending on the property.
Avoid repeatedly plugging in equipment if the outlet seems loose, sparks, or cuts in and out. Those are not normal signs of a simple switch setting or a failed charger.
Check nearby GFCI outlets
Many outlets are protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter, commonly called a GFCI. These outlets are often found in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, exterior locations, utility rooms, and commercial spaces near sinks or water sources. A GFCI may protect several regular-looking outlets farther down the circuit.
Look for outlets with TEST and RESET buttons in the same area and in nearby rooms. In some homes, a garage GFCI can affect an exterior outlet, a bathroom outlet can affect another bathroom, or a kitchen GFCI can affect outlets along one counter.
With dry hands and no visible damage at the outlet, press the RESET button firmly on the GFCI. If it resets and power returns, monitor the circuit. If it immediately trips again, do not keep resetting it. Something connected to that circuit may have a fault, moisture may be involved, or the circuit may need professional troubleshooting.
For property managers and business owners, a tripped GFCI can also affect equipment that may not be obvious at first, such as exterior cameras, access-control power supplies, network equipment, break-room outlets, or lighting controls. Identifying everything on the affected circuit helps reduce repeat interruptions.
Look for a tripped breaker – without opening the panel
A circuit breaker can trip when a circuit is overloaded or when it detects a fault. Common examples include running multiple high-demand devices on one circuit, using a damaged cord, or connecting equipment that draws more power than the circuit can support.
At the electrical panel, look for a breaker that is in the middle position or visibly out of line with the others. A breaker may not always look fully off when it has tripped. If you can identify the likely breaker and there are no warning signs, move it fully to OFF and then back to ON once.
Do not remove the panel cover or touch anything inside the panel. If the breaker will not reset, trips again, feels warm, or you are unsure which breaker controls the outlet, stop there. Repeatedly resetting a breaker does not solve the underlying cause and can make troubleshooting harder.
When one dead outlet may point to a wiring issue
If the GFCI and breaker are operating normally but one outlet remains dead, the problem could be at that outlet or elsewhere on the circuit. Electrical connections can loosen over time, especially at outlets that see frequent use. A failed receptacle, damaged wiring connection, or issue at another outlet upstream can interrupt power downstream.
This is why an outlet that stopped working may not be repaired by replacing the visible outlet alone. A proper service call typically involves tracing the affected circuit, checking connections and devices safely, and confirming that the outlet is correctly supplied and operating after the repair.
A loose outlet is another reason to schedule service. If a plug falls out easily, the receptacle moves when used, or the faceplate is cracked, the outlet may no longer provide a reliable connection. In homes with children, rental units, busy offices, or shared common areas, addressing worn outlets promptly is especially practical.
Warning signs that call for prompt electrical service
Some outlet failures are straightforward. Others can signal conditions that should not wait for trial-and-error resets. Turn off power to the affected circuit if you can do so safely and arrange an inspection when you notice any of the following:
- A burning smell, discoloration, melting plastic, smoke, or visible sparks
- Buzzing, crackling, popping, or an outlet that is warm to the touch
- A breaker or GFCI that repeatedly trips after connected devices are unplugged
- Flickering lights, multiple dead outlets, or power loss in more than one area
- Water exposure near the outlet, including outdoor locations or garage areas
- An outlet that affects essential equipment, security systems, gates, refrigerators, servers, or business operations
In multifamily properties, a failed outlet in a common area or unit can also create a maintenance concern that affects residents, lighting, cleaning equipment, or building operations. Document the affected location, what was plugged in, and whether any breaker or GFCI tripped. That information helps an electrician diagnose the issue efficiently.
Avoid common temporary fixes
Extension cords and power strips can be useful for short-term, low-demand needs, but they are not a replacement for a failed or insufficient outlet. Avoid routing cords under rugs, through doorways, or across walkways where they can be damaged or create a trip hazard.
It is also worth looking at the reason the outlet failed. A garage outlet that regularly serves EV charging equipment, power tools, freezers, and outdoor equipment may need a dedicated circuit or a load evaluation. An office with too many devices connected through power strips may need additional properly located receptacles. In a commercial space, recurring outlet problems can be a sign that tenant equipment has outgrown the original electrical layout.
The right solution depends on the circuit, the equipment connected to it, and the property’s electrical capacity. Sometimes the repair is limited to a damaged device or connection. Other times, the practical answer is a new dedicated circuit, additional outlets, a panel upgrade, or better distribution for planned equipment.

A qualified electrician can determine whether the outlet problem is caused by a tripped protective device, a failed receptacle, a loose connection, damaged wiring, an overloaded circuit, or a larger panel-related issue.
